Is Hot Air Ballooning Safe in Dubai? Licensing & Weather

Yes, hot air ballooning in Dubai operates under GCAA-licensed pilots, and every flight only goes ahead when conditions at the launch site are calm and clear enough to fly safely. The pilot makes that call each morning, not the night before, and a cancelled flight for weather is a safety decision, not a booking failure on your part.

Who licenses the pilots and the balloon in Dubai?

Our pilots hold licenses issued by the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), the UAE’s civil aviation regulator, and every flight operates in line with its aviation requirements. If you need documentation for a corporate booking or a specific request, contact us directly and we can point you to what’s available.

How is the go or no-go decision made each morning?

The Pilot-in-Command assesses conditions at the launch site itself on the morning of the flight, principally wind and visibility, and makes the final call before boarding begins. This is deliberately not a decision made from a forecast the night before, conditions in the desert can shift, so the real-time assessment at the site is what actually determines whether a flight goes ahead.

If the pilot calls off a flight for weather, even after you've already been picked up, you're offered a free reschedule to the next available morning or a full refund. See our cancellation and refund policy for the complete terms.

What does the balloon consist of, and what is checked before you board?

A hot air balloon has three main parts: the envelope, the large fabric bag that holds heated air, the burner, which heats that air, and the basket, where passengers and the pilot stand. Before every flight, the crew inflates and inspects the envelope, checks the burner and fuel supply, and confirms the basket and rigging are secure. This happens as a standard part of pre-flight preparation, not something guests need to verify themselves.

What is in the safety briefing, and what is the landing position?

Before boarding, the pilot runs a short briefing, typically 5 to 10 minutes, covering how to stand in the basket, what to hold onto, and how to position yourself for landing: knees slightly bent, hands on the rim. Every guest gets the same briefing regardless of flying experience.

Why do balloons only fly at dawn?

Because the air is calmest in the hour around sunrise, before the ground heats unevenly and starts generating thermals and light wind. A hot air balloon needs stable air to fly safely, which is why the pickup window sits between 3:45 and 4:30 AM rather than later in the morning. Our sunrise timeline guide goes into more detail on why the schedule is built the way it is.

Who should not fly?

Flying isn’t recommended during pregnancy, or within roughly 6 months of major surgery on the heart, back or knees, given the standing position and the landing. Guests over about 120 kilograms may need an extra seat or incur a surcharge, purely for load balancing across the basket. If you have a specific health question, the honest approach is to tell us when you book rather than assume it’s fine.

I’m nervous about heights. What helps?

Most nervous flyers find the experience calmer than expected, there’s no sudden drop, and the ascent is gradual enough that many guests aren’t sure exactly when they left the ground. Standing toward the center of the basket compartment, away from the edge, tends to help if you’re uneasy about the view down. Our pilot is also happy to talk you through the flight as it happens, which many nervous guests find reassuring.

What happens if the flight is cancelled?

You’re offered a free reschedule to the next available morning, or a full refund, whichever you’d prefer. This applies whether the cancellation happens before pickup or after you’ve already arrived at the launch site. Full details are on our cancellation and refund policy page.

Frequently asked questions

Can the pilot cancel a flight at the launch site, even after pickup?

Yes, the final weather decision is made at the launch site itself, not the night before. If conditions aren't right, you're offered a free reschedule or a full refund, even if that decision comes after pickup.

Is there turbulence during the flight?

Balloons only fly in calm conditions, so noticeable turbulence is rare. The flight itself is generally described as smooth and quiet once airborne.

How hard is the landing?

Landings are typically gentle, closer to a firm step than a jolt. The pilot briefs everyone on the landing position before boarding, and ground crew are on hand at touchdown.

Can I fly with a mild cold or on blood-pressure medication?

For any ongoing health condition or medication, the honest answer is to consult your doctor and let us know when booking. We're not medical professionals, so we rely on guests to disclose relevant conditions.

Is alcohol allowed on the flight or at the camp afterward?

No, alcohol isn't permitted as part of the flight or the associated activities, in line with our standard terms and conditions.
